Red Army Watches featuring SevenFriday

Following my recent foray into watch watching, I have found some unusual fare at Red Army Watches (http://www.redarmywatches.com/) which retail brands of exquisite watches that are not run-of-the-mill and fit into their "Acquirable Timepieces" brand assessment strategy.
SevenFriday M1
This time SevenFriday is featured. According to the blurb by Red Army Watches, SevenFriday is a Zurich-based brand which "is inspired by industrial elements, tools, engines, machines, wheels, and art. The products’ design is a result of this inspiration in combination with high-end production and complex construction. It is a merger of contrasting materials and styles in harmony. Sevenfriday is made for individuals with high demands with regard to design, quality and uniqueness."

Currently, their available product lines are grouped under the 'M' and 'P' series with special editions of them sold out.

SevenFriday P3/3

Just like me, you may have wandered about the use of the moniker "SevenFriday". Evan Yeung at http://monochrome-watches.com/one-friday-with-seven-friday/, offers this insight: "When it comes to timepieces, the number seven is easily deduced to be a sign for the number of days there are in a week. But the addition of a specific day – Friday, seems to confuse most folks new to the brand. In most countries, a five day work week would mean that Friday is a sign of relief, or a cause for celebration. Leading to the popular phrase “thank god it’s Friday (TGIF)”. By simply not dwelling too much on the past and worry too much about the future, the Seven Friday philosophy is fulfilled. That is to live each day to the fullest, and that living each day as if it’s Friday is what the brand envision for everyone.

The underlying meaning of the Seven Friday brand can easily be explained by two simple words, and that is “carpe diem”, or in other words to simply seize the day!"

Wits and Wisdom by Mark Twain

According to Wikipedia, "Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885),the latter often called "the Great American Novel"."

Mark Twain
Renown for his wits and insights, the following is an extract (source unestablished thus far) of Mark Twain's observations of life for you to pore over.

"1. Age is in your mind more than anywhere else.

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

With this clever play on words, Twain is telling us age doesn't matter as long as you don't give it significance. It means that a young soul can dwell in an old body and all the limitations we put on age, other than those physical ones, are actually in our head.

This advice isn't just about age, it's also about self-confidence. When we believe we have a problem, we transmit that to the people around us and so bring it to pass. People can feel the lack of self-confidence in others and they will treat you as you treat yourself. So, once you make that mental 'switch', the enviornment will too.

2. Humor is one of the most important things.

“Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.”

“Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.”

The simple act of laughing and responding to humor is one of the greatest experiences of the human condition. Life is nothing without laughter, just a sad shell, and although there are pleasures in life that have nothing to do with humor, they are always improved upon and made more palatable with a good side dish of laughter. Humor helps almost all situations and using it will draw people to you faster than anything else you may do.

3. Anger will hurt you more than help you.

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

Anger is an inescapable human emotion; we all get mad once in a while. But there are ways to control out anger, and not let it control us. Just like laughter is transient in nature, so should anger be. A joke will make you laugh again and again if you think about it over and over, and anger is no exception, the more you think about it, the angrier you'll become.

So, when you are angry at something or someone, it's important you let it die out naturally; don't continue to feed it. Think of other things and apply your cognitive resources at things that make you happy.

4. The world doesn't owe you, you owe yourselves.

“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”

The feeling of being owned something by the world is common in this generation. We all feel entitled to something, whether it's a steady job, money, happiness etc. But these feelings usually lead only to frustration, bitterness, anger and resentment. Let go of these expectations from yourselves and from the world, and you'll see that everything becomes a bit easier. You do deserve the best, but you'll need to go and get it for yourselves.

5. Having a new idea is not a crime.

“A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.”

When you see things differently than other people, expect mixed reactions. Some will support you, others ignore you, while still others will try to bring you down. Most people tend to hold on to their preconceived notions for dear life, and will even act aggressively or negatively when these are threatened by an opposing opinion.

But remember, all great discoveries were once such novel ideas, and many of them carried negative reactions. You should say what you believe and act upon it, don't let anyone tell you your ideas are 'too weird'. After all, human flight used to be such a novel and strange idea.

6. Don't let your thoughts dwell on the negative.

“Drag your thoughts away from your troubles… by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it.”

You must watch your thoughts, because it is so easy to get into a habit of thinking negatively, hashing our worries and troubles over and over in our head, until they seem as big as mountains and as dark as night. Thinking positively is one of the best gifts you can give yourselves, and will ultimately lead to you doing everything a little better, with people reacting much better to your attitude.

In the end, life is made up of 'tasks' we must accomplish, some small, some big and difficult. Try to look at any 'difficult' task as a challenge and as an opportunity to learn something about yourselves.

7. Instead of worrying about yourself, worry about others and help yourself.

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.”

There is something magical about making someone else smile or getting them out of a tough situation. Helping others not only makes us better people and buys us goodwill from those around us, it also makes our own problems seem smaller because we're not preoccupied with them 24/7. If you help others without thinking, just jumping in and helping out, you'll be the one ending up with a smile on your face."

8. Try everything, regret nothing.

(Daily Refreshing's note: "Everything" that is within the bounds of morality, legality and civility.)

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

A beautiful quote my Mark Twain and one that is full of truth. It's always easier to delay things we want to do. After all, life usually gets in the way and we tell ourselves 'well, we'll try it later'. But as we get older, those opportunities become more and more rare, and the things we end up regretting the most are the things we simply never tried to do.

Failure shouldn't scare us, it's a part of life. What is scarier is having opportunities and never acting on them. So when you think you want to do something - do it. Failure may happen, but at least you'll know the answer to the question: "What if?"."

Inspiration Is Everywhere

It's true -- inspiration is everywhere. So many different things can inspire us. It can come through avenues such music, songs, written words, places, people, sports events, and new products and services. So, let's stay alert and hungry for more of what works for us.

This gift of joy is found by feeding our individual passions in life diligently so that we can grow in our enjoyment what makes us feel alive beyond the ebb and flow of daily living. Live life with zest by adding fuel to our dreams and pretty soon we will live the life that we have imagined.

Rotary Watches -- Durable and Reliable

Rotary Aquaspeed Ladies' Diver's Chronograph Watch
There are some great stories told of Rotary watches. Consider the following testimonial from http://www.rotarywatches.com/en/service/customer-testimonials :-

"30 Years of Perfect Time

In 1979 I purchased a Rotary Aquaplunge. After 30 years this watch still keeps perfect time and has only had batteries replaced in that time. It travels with me everywhere and is used for diving and swimming. To this day, it has never missed a beat.

I thought that I should write to you to tell you how impressed I am with this product. When I purchased it all those years ago, I never entertained the thought that it would still be on my wrist after 30 years! Some of my friends have urged me to replace it for a more up to date model but why would I get rid of a perfectly good watch that has served me so well and now represents years of wonderful memories.

I see that you now do an “Aquaspeed” collection and I feel privileged to be in possession of a watch that could have been the inspiration for this!

Simon Bowden - Brisbane, Australia"

Rotary Men's Skeleton Leather Strap Watch

Rotary Aquaspeed Men's Bracelet Watch

The brief history and mission of Rotary watches as obtained from http://www.rotarywatches.com is as follows:-

"Rotary Watches - About Us
Rotary Watches Limited is an award-winning worldwide brand of classic timepieces. The firm was founded in 1895 by Moise Dreyfuss in the Swiss town of La Chaux de Fonds. Rotary is still owned by the Dreyfuss family through Dreyfuss Group Holdings and, with Robert Dreyfuss at the helm, is the oldest family-owned and run Swiss watchmaker.

The founder, Moise Dreyfuss was dedicated to creating beautiful watches with timeless elegance. His attention to detail and insistence on first class personal service ensured the business grew quickly. Within 12 years of the founding of the company success led to the opening of a UK office.

In 1925 the now famous winged Rotary logo was introduced and after the war, under the leadership of Teddy Dreyfuss, the brand developed further, with innovative watches, sophisticated marketing and powerful advertising campaigns.

Rotary timepieces are now sold in over 35 countries throughout the world. Rotary specialises in designing affordably stylish timepieces, blending the ‘old with the new’ and the ‘contemporary with the classic’ to achieve a distinctive range of watches."

According to Wikipedia, "In 1940 Rotary became the official watch supplier for the British Army.Coinciding as this did with the Second World War and the drafting of huge numbers into the army, the move put a Rotary watch in almost every household in Britain, leaving a lasting impression of the brand in the UK. More recently, Rotary Watches was elected as one of the UK's "superbrands" in 2006 and has retained its place in successive years."

Also, "Rotary watches typically use either a quartz or automatic movement, and often feature what Rotary refer to as the "Dolphin Standard" (equivalent to at least ISO 2281), meaning they are water resistant and may be suitable for all-day swimming and diving. Unique to Rotary is the "Revelation" design of reversible watch, which features two distinct movements and faces, allowing the wearer to change style at will or easily switch between two different time zones."

Rotary Watches has partnered with some amazing events past and present, from the prestigious 'Beaufort Polo Club' to the adventurous 'Clipper Round the World Yacht Race'. Of late, it has signed an exclusive 4 year sponsorship deal as 'Global Official Timekeeper of Chelsea Football Club'.

For ardent fans of Chelsea FC, this is an opportune time to own a special edition Rotary watch with their club's emblem. For all others, if you are into automatic and quartz watches, you may wish to add Rotary to your wrist without having to break the bank.

Luxury On Wheels

A friend e-mailed me the following spread of a luxurious mobile home which would cater well to those who fancy travelling with class. It goes to show that if you can dream it, it can be done. The clearer our dream, the higher the likelihood for us to marshal the resources and ingenuity to achieve it.

Yes, while I am acquainted to seeing clips of luxurious yacht, jet plane and limousines, this is the first time that I have seen such luxurious mobile homes or camper vans.

Quarterly Literary Review Singapore (QLRS)

For those of you who like to read stories, poems and/or essays, why not take a peek at some contemporary Singapore literature at www.qlrs.com

The standards are considerably high and I think you will enjoy this acquaintance will Singapore literature.

As sourced from their web site, this is the raison d'etre and workings of QLRS:-

"QLRS (in full, the Quarterly Literary Review Singapore) is the Internet literary journal of Singapore. Our mission is to promote the literary arts in Singapore, to stimulate the feedback mechanisms in the literary scene, and to develop Singaporean writers to international standards. Our standards are therefore high, and our paradigms are the TLSes and LRBs of this world. We believe that good writing can and will emerge in Singapore, and we aim to aid that process by applying rigorous critical and editorial criteria.

To that extent, QLRS is also nonpartisan. In many writing scenes around the world, too much energy is expended in getting into the right cliques. We aim to let quality of writing be the only benchmark. It may of course be argued that ‘quality’ is itself subjective. We gain objectivity by opening submissions to consideration by and across a pool of editors, each of whom have different conceptions of quality.

QLRS is a non-profit volunteer collective. Although its startup financing was through commitments from individuals, advertisement revenue is incidental and aimed at covering operating costs. We are thankful for the time, editorial and resource commitments of our volunteers and sponsor organizations.

Our editorial team currently comprises:

Chief/Poetry: Toh Hsien Min
Short Stories: Yeow Kai Chai
Essays: Yong Shu Hoong
Criticism: Ng Wei Chian
Interviews: Yong Shu Hoong
Extra Media: Ng Wei Chian
The Acid Tongue: Cyril Wong

Our other (non-editorial) affiliates are:
Technical: Alvin Pang
Facebook: Stephanie Ye

The views and opinions expressed in the journal are entirely those of the respective contributors and must not be construed to be the views and opinions of QLRS, its editors and/or its affiliates."

Awaken The Genius In You!

What if somebody tells you that you are a genius? And, you have never even in your wildest imagination thought of taking a Mensa test and, right now, you are living a downright ordinary life with zero noteworthy achievement. Well, in all probability you would reckon that the person must be out of his mind.

Take it from brain experts like Tony Buzan that your brain is a sleeping giant. Truth be told, your brain has close to 100 billion cells and each of them is inter-linked with about 20,000 other cells. Based on such a myriad of linkages, this means that you are capable of generating 100 billion to the 20,000th power of thoughts or ideas!

That is all head knowledge and would not do you no good unless you use your brain more to work for you. For example, you have heard it often enough from people that they are in two minds when they are unsure about a matter.

What if you are told that you have actually three minds? First and obvious one, is your Conscious Mind. This is the physically alert state of mind that you use to receive and process incoming information by comparing them with your stored memories to make a snap decision on the fast lane or deliberated decision on the slow lane.

Not so obvious is the Subsconscious Mind. This is where you store every data, information, experiences, decisions or thoughts that have been filtered through and generated by your conscious mind. Whatever you accept as reality will be stored as such by your subconscious mind. If you affirm that you are a genius, then your subsconscious will record accordingly.

Then, there is the least known mind of all -- the Superconscious Mind (i.e., culmination of the unconscious). According to Brian Tracy in his book "Creativity & Problem Solving", "Your ability to tap into and use your superconscious mind on a regular basis is your key to unlocking your creative genius in every part of your life."

My theory is that the superconscious mind is what people label as 'at the back of my mind' or the back-burner. Remember, being on a holiday but not really feeling like you are on a holiday because of a gnawing problem? The superconscious mind is actually working constantly at the back of your mind. However, it is working against you because you are stewing the problem.

So, how do you activate the superconscious state of mind to work for you? My suggestion would be to focus on the positive rather than the negative; to search for a solution rather than nurse the problem or to set a new goal with new resolved rather than dwelling still on your missed goal (yes, you missed the first position in swimming by three seconds a year ago).

Get the positives into your subconscious in as many ways as you can: (i) Write down your quest for a solution or a dream as specifically as possible and review it daily (visualization); (ii) speak to yourself affirmative words so that your can hear it and not just think about it silently (auditory); and (iii) act out like you have achieve what you want to achieve (kinetic).

Once, the subsconscious gets hold of what you want to attain in no uncertain terms, the information that is transferred to your superconscious mind will commence working for you non-stop and align your entire being so as to attract and work out a solution. Hey, you have billions of brain cells to count on.

Come to think about it -- you've got something better than the folktale genie in a bottle who would only grant you a maximum of three wishes! Get real, go for it and awaken the potential genius in you!
