Red Army Watches featuring Azimuth

Following recent my foray into watch watching, I have found some unusual fare at Red Army Watches (http://www.redarmywatches.com/) which retail brands of exquisite watches that are unconventional and fit into their "Acquirable Timepieces" brand assessment strategy

This time Azimuth watches are featured. According to Wikipedia, "The azimuth is the angle between the north vector and the perpendicular projection of the star down onto the horizon. Azimuth is usually measured in degrees (°). The concept is used in navigation, astronomy, engineering, mapping, mining and artillery."

As sourced from http://www.azimuthwatch.com/, their background information are as follows:-

"Our Company

Biel / Bienne has long been an important centre for fine Swiss watchmaking.

This is where Azimuth conception begins- In search of a unique identity deeply rooted in watchmaking design, innovation and tradition.

In Azimuth, the product development team is constantly pursuing developments in the field of complications and product design to position itself at the forefront of horological excellence. This is especially evident in the way the company has explored technological limits with the in-house development of its semi-complication modules.

Conceptual Design

A visionary virtuoso in innovative watchmaking bolstered by time-honoured horological master craftsmanship. Azimuth boldly brandishes its inventive independent spirit, blazing its own trail with an exceptional focus in realising avant-garde timepieces through the perfect balance of cutting-edge technology and traditional watchmaking know-how.

Our dedicated designers conceptualise every Azimuth timepiece right from the beginning. The hand-drawn concepts are transformed into technical drawings with computer-aided design before prototyping. At each stage, the development process is reviewed and improved by our engineers to ensure consistency in performance before production.

Customisation

The distinctiveness of a man is manifested in his choice of possessions. And there is no greater mark of individuality than a personalised timepiece that bears the mark of your soul and taste. Azimuth perpetuates this sense of individuality through its Special Customisation Program.

This programme allows you to create a timepiece that is unique in its own right. With the help of master craftsmen in the House of Azimuth, you have the opportunity to specify your choice of hand-engraved movements, guilloche decorations or other complex design features to stamp your personal mark through all of eternity.

When you wear an Azimuth, you not only express your individualism and taste for the finer things in life, but you also carry with you the love and passion for horological art. In short, it is a reflection of passion."

Here are a few selected Azimuth masterpieces for your viewing pleasure:-

Red Army Watches featuring Alexander Shorokhoff

Welcome to more on the world of watches other than the usual fare served up by newspaper and lifestyle magazines. Today, I stumbled upon Red Army Watches (http://www.redarmywatches.com/) which retails brands of exquisite watches that are not run-of-the-mill and yet relatively affordable when compared to luxurious watches.

In their own words, Red Army Watches are:-

"Non-conformist. Daring. Revolutionary. And probably the most radical, plain madness.

Red Army Watches has been labelled in many ways, and the anti-establishment movement is what molded us from the beginning. We took in a common product, a watch, and presented it in a different light, changing the traditional perception in terms of what a watch is and what options are there available for the discerning customers.

We are first and foremost a retailer with an exciting portfolio of non-mainstream brands qualified to fit into our Acquirable Timepieces brand assessment strategy. As of 2013, collectively we operate four outlets in Singapore, three in Malaysia, and three in Indonesia. We own and run three retail concepts namely Red Army Watches, Krasnaya-The Watch Art Gallery, and Instrumentum.

What sets us apart from many other retailers is that we take our brands branding effort very seriously. We work closely with the brand owner to push the branding effort within our territory and in most cases, from the brand introduction phase."

First up for this release, Alexander Shorokhoff watches are featured. By way of introduction from  http://www.alexander-shorokhoff.de/:-

"Alexander Shorokhov was born in 1960 in Moscow. Early on in his school years,  he discovered his interest and talent in engineering, drawing and design. As a student he consolidated his knowledge in these disciplines and accomplished his engineering studies in Moscow with distinction. His excellent results meant he was one of the few who selected to getting a good job in a state owned construction company in Moscow. After a very short period of time working as an engineer, he succeeded quickly to become a chief engineer and later getting the top job as a director of the company.

In 1988, he began to participate in politics and became leader of the youth organisation in one of the districts Moscow. Because of his achievements and commitment, he was chosen in 1991, by the Russian president Michael Gorbatchev in a group of 20 „progressive” managers for further qualification under the conditions of free market in a sense of Glasnost and Perestroika. He attended a course in economics, which was organised by the ministry of economics of Hessen region in Germany. During this course he was studying German and English languages. In 1992, he founded a marketing company in order to sale and market the best and most important Russian watch brand Poljot. Not pleased by half-measures it was not long before he started to produce watches on his own in order meet high demands. This allowed him to apply and combine his talent and experience in mechanical design as well as his new knowledge of the free market.

In 1995, he launched his first own watch brand "Poljot-International“. This was followed in 2003 by the establishment of his signature premium label “Alexander Shorokhoff “. Nowadays, the small workshop in a small town called Alzenau, Germany is producing watches that are in high demand by watch connoisseurs the world over. Alexander Shorokhoff watches have become some of the most valuable and attractive objects d’art among all mechanical timekeepers."

Inspiration from Tivoli Gardens @Copenhagen, Denmark

From what I have read, Walt Disney and Roy Disney were visiting Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, in the late 1940s and were impressed by its cleanliness.

Inspired, Walt Disney set his sight on creating Disneyland -- "an amusement park that is so clean and beautiful that parents will bring their children from everywhere to visit it over and over again."

Here then are some images of Tivoli Gardens for your viewing pleasure:-

Heatwave - Passion for shoe making

It takes passion and confidence to keep moving and move forward in life in the face of challenges and discouragement.

Heatwave has the passion for shoe making and putting on a pair of their shoes could just be the thing for you to catch their vibes and pump up your courage, empowering you to put your best foot forward for successes to come.

Heatwave - Floral Pattern Pump

Heatwave - Multistrap Sandal

Heatwave - Glossy Pointed Toe Pump

Pretty soon you may be grabbing for their bags, too, which have been added to their product lines as they extend their passion beyond shoes.

For your ease of reference, this blurb is taken from http://www.heatwaveshoes.com/ :-

"Our Vision
We believe in the simple principle that a good pair of heels can empower a woman in her daily journeys. The dream of bringing well-crafted high heels to young women began with just one shop in Singapore. It has since grown to a community of like-minded women and business partners around the world, who appreciate our products for their comfort and originality.

Our commitment to this dream is reflected in our prices. It is based on the idea that a good quality, affordable pair of shoes is one of the simplest forms of luxury and that it should be accessible to as many women as possible. We would like our customers to feel a heartfelt satisfaction and connection with our shoes, making us part of their adventures of a lifetime.

Craftmanship
Each pair Heatwave shoes is a representation of our belief in innovation, attention to detail and efficiency. Processes are kept simple in small-scale factories and it is still very much a hand made product.

The journey of our shoes starts in the design room, where questions of trends, practicality and comfort are addressed. Once at the factory, the mold for each design is fitted and the textiles selected are prepared. Then each part from the inner, to the heels and sole is put together, often without the help of machines. Before each pair of Heatwave shoes are packed and sent to the shelves, they are rigorously checked for defects. Men and women at the factory oversee each stage of this process intensively.

We call this ‘quality with a human touch’."

Trivia: How many people does it take to make a pair of Heatwave shoes? For the answer, please look up http://www.heatwaveshoes.com/

Ode to Words

Words are the building blocks of communication and they may be either verbalized or written. We share our thoughts and feelings with relative ease through the medium of words although not always perfectly, giving rise to the occasional miscommunication.

Without words, the alternative would be for us to connect with, say, utterances (think: babies crying for food, attention or changing of diapers), hand gestures, eye movement and facial expression. However, one could well imagine how limiting such modes of communication would be.

Whether spoken or written, words have to be learnt so that users would have a common platform as to their meaning and we could distinguish between, say, an apple from apps, abs, Adam's apple, Newton's apple, apple pie, Apple Computer and Apple Daily. Oh, yes, my dream Apple Boulevard, as well (if there is already one, please let me know).

Words are a necessity of life. They facilitate interpersonal communication, help us to understand others and be understood by them, in turn.

Of course, there may come a time or stage when we know people who are close to us so well that communication can transcend words and become intuitive. It's like the legendary swordsman who started with a wooden sword, advanced to a metal sword and then reach an advance stage where he could spar without a sword.

Oh, okay, the aforesaid paragraph may be true of spoken words. For us who write or blog though, we are mere mortals who just have to formulate and dish out the choicest of words in written form.
"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world." -- Robin Williams
Long live the written words!

Keeping Ahead of Time with Citizen Eco-Drive Watches

Imagine a watch that is reliable, runs independent of kinetic energy or battery replacement and is powered by light. That to me is a value proposition that is too good to be missed.

For instance, this is my first Citizen Eco-Drive watch that has been working for me fuss-free and clocking accurate time non-stop over several years now.

As gleaned from www.citizen.com, its Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light – from any natural or artificial light source. The light which is absorbed through the face of the watch is then converted into energy and stored in a permanently rechargeable lithium-ion cell, which recharges continuously in any kind of light to run forever.

To this day I am still befuddled as to why such environmentally-friendly watches do not seem to be catching on just yet, en masse. Could it be that they are lacking in the looks department? I don't think so and have recently procured a second Eco-Drive watch.

You could evaluate for yourself on whether they would appeal to you by googling for "Images of Citizen Eco-Drive Watches" or take a peep at  http://www.bodying.sg/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Eco-drive&osCsid=dff6vadjq0iqjpdhmp28v0m9a5

Maybe, perhaps, this technology is simply ahead of its time. Looking to the future, eco-friendly watches such as Citizen Eco-Drive could well be ticking away all over the world, unstoppably.

Get Kicking with Kickapoo Joy Juice!

During my teenage years I had a good fill of Kickapoo Joy Juice (KJJ) and got perked up each time. It has been quite a while now since I had a KJJ as I am now not so into fizzy drinks.

Back then, which was way before the advent of the internet, there was such a dearth of the proliferation of information that I had wandered for the longest time about the inspiration for KJJ and the two characters shown on the can with one of them looking distinctively like a native American Indian wielding a machete.

Now, from my desk, I have been able to suss out this bit of history from http://www.drinkkickapoo.com/ and shown here for your ease of reference:-

"The name, "Kickapoo Joy Juice", was originally coined as a "volatile brew" in Li'l Abner, an American comic strip. Al Capp, the cartoonist, described the drink as "a liquor of such stupefying potency that the hardiest citizens of Dogpatch, after the first burning sip, rose into the air, stiff as frozen codfish". It was said to be an elixir of such power that the fumes alone have been known to melt the rivets off battleships.

Capp asserted in 1965 that the cartoon "never has suggested that the drink is moonshine", in response to claims that the Kickapoo Joy Juice of Li'l Abner was an illicitly distilled liquor. Brewed by Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat, two of the comic strip's backwood poachers, the ingredients of the brew are both mysterious and all encompassing, (much like the contents of their cave, which has been known to harbor prehistoric monsters.)

When a batch "needs more body," the formidable pair simply goes out and clubs one (often a moose), and tosses it in. Over the years, the "recipe" has called for live grizzly bears, panthers, kerosene, horseshoes and anvils, among other ingredients.

Kickapoo Today

Kickapoo is the first brand Monarch introduced in international markets. It was launched in Southeast Asia in 1966 and has been delighting consumers ever since. Today Kickapoo has become the #1 heavy citrus brand in Malaysia and Singapore thanks to its superior taste. In those countries, the brand now challenges Sprite and 7Up for market leadership after colas. Kickapoo contains caffeine. The amount of caffeine will, in general, be superior to the amount present in leading cola brands."

Oh, okay, the superior amount of caffeine explains the 'kick' I have from KJJ. As for the name Kickapoo itself, my hunch is that Al Capp had in mind the Kickapoo tribe with Lonesome Polecat resembling one. Just take a look at this picture for good measure:-
Babe Shkit, Kickapoo Chief from Oklahoma

By the way, here is Wikipedia's take on Kickapoo for our enrichment and fuller enjoyment of KJJ (drink in a bit of history and reality):-

"The Kickapoo people (Kickapoo: Kiikaapoa or Kiikaapoi) are an Algonquian-speaking Native American tribe. Anishinaabeg say the name "Kickapoo" (Giiwigaabaw in the Anishinaabe language and its Kickapoo cognate Kiwikapawa) means "Stands here and there," which may have referred to the tribe's migratory patterns. The name can also mean "wanderer". This interpretation is contested and generally believed to be a folk etymology.

Today there are three federally recognized Kickapoo tribes in the United States: Kickapoo Tribe of Indians of the Kickapoo Reservation in Kansas, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, and the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas."

I suppose in this modern era of e-shopping you could well get hold of KJJ even if it ain't available in your home country. Or just grab hold of it when travelling overseas to the United States, Canada or Asian countries where this joy juice is distributed.

Get some Kickapoo Joy Juice today, spread some joy and experience the delightful 'intoxication' of Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat. It's simply out of this world!

ODE TO ART featuring Coplu

When I walked into Ode To Art Raffles City gallery this afternoon, I wanted to see one or two of those vivid and invigorating paintings of dreams by Coplu which I recalled seeing before.

Although I did not get to see the ones with a black backdrop on dreams, the staff obliged to let me take some snapshots which are shown below for your viewing pleasure and inspiration:

Guarding My Soul's Dreams

Dreaming A Trusting Friendship

I'll Find New Dreams For You

Introducing Coplu

Coplu

As sourced from Ode To Art web site, Coplu was born in the town of Ushak, Turkey and is now based in the United States. He is a self-taught artist whose accolades include the following:

* Special Talent Prize International Nasreddin Hodja Cartoon Competition –Turkey.

* 2nd Prize, 3rd prize and Mention, International Okhotsk Cartoon Competition –Japan.

* Honorable Mention, International Taejon Cartoon Competition -Korea

* 3rd Prize, International Simavi Cartoon Competition -Turkey

In his own words, Coplu says, "My work is a mirror that reflects the feelings, beliefs, thoughts, fears and experiences that we all share in life. The subjects of my paintings are the relationships between ourselves, and the environments we are connected to. My figures are mostly on the edge of contrasting feelings such as hope and despair, joy and pain, love and hate. I aim to provoke viewer's thoughts with contradictions because most of our acts and instincts encompass these.

Generally, there are three strong elements in my paintings that I have the privilege to combine, all of which I try to express a vibrancy through - color, humor and technique. Being raised alongside broad cultural diversities, where all feelings and levels of expression were represented by color, they became very much part of my life. Humor is a key element in my paintings as I try to see the funny side in all things - I believe it is one of the most effective ways to open minds and raise consciousness.

Being a self taught artist I have had the opportunity of developing my free style and uniqueness through having a free soul and mind. I try to combine my creative elements in a simple, instinctive way so that they strike a chord with anybody who has experienced what life brings their way.
I have just recently decided to publish my work for the first time in 20 years offering collectors exclusive limited edition prints.
Life is Beautiful… "

Get Blown Away by Tern Foldable Bicycles

If you have space constraint or lacking a garage to store your bike, why not consider Tern foldable bikes which are classy, sleek, ergonomic, speedy and fun to ride? Best of all, of course, is that they are compact and require minimal storage space.

To shed some light on this bike manufacturer, the following blurb is taken from their web site ( http://www.ternbicycles.com/two-new-tern-bikes-win-eurobike-awardand) and shown here for your ease of reference:-

"We are Cyclists. We’re a pretty varied collection of personalities but we all share the fundamental belief that cycling is central to a healthy sustainable future. So although we use our bikes in different ways — weekend rides with our kids, triathlons, BMX competitions, or every day commuting to work — we all share the same love of cycling.

We are Diverse. In the age of the Internet and open borders, people and ideas are co-mingling with stunning speed. Our company is a reflection of this diverse new world, a richly chaotic crash of different ethnicities, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds, that ensures that our point of view is seasoned by many different kinds of eyes and our product, tested in all kinds of conditions. We have team members throughout the world, in offices in Taipei, Taiwan; Austin, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Humboldt, California; Bend, Oregon; London, England; Turku, Finland; Stuttgart, Germany; Shanghai, China; and Schaffhausen, Switzerland — just about every time zone. Twenty-four hours a day, in some part of the world, we are designing, testing, and riding our product.

We are Environmentally-minded. A commitment to sustainability is central to who we are. It starts with the product we make — bicycles — which are the ultimate high efficiency vehicle. It also extends to how we make our products — made from quality materials and designed to be serviceable rather than land-fillable. And we are constantly searching for ways to reduce our impact, like minimizing packaging, specifying recycled cardboard, and reducing use of harmful chemicals like chromium. It also extends to how we all get to work — 15% of us now get to work by bike or walking; 75% of us take bus, train or scooter; and only 10% of us drive to work. But we can still do a lot better, and that’s something we’ll be working on.

We are Committed to improving things. We will give at least 1% of our profits, every year, to environmental or social causes. We all want to live in a world with clean water, clean air, and safe food. But with things going the way they are, it’s getting harder and harder. We need to work to protect our planet and we need to support the individuals and groups that are bearing the brunt of that responsibility.

We are Tern."

To the uninitiated, foldable bikes aren't made for the fast lane. Tern bikes will change that perception -- they are matter-of-fact high performance bikes and by no means lightweight in their category.

Be blown away by the following 2 reviews of Tern bikes:-

Tern Verge X10 - Lightweight Folding Bike
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6Nsf6-_aAs

Tern Verge X30h Folding Bicycle Review
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXpq9iI51kw

And, if like me, you have been wandering why they call themselves "Tern", here is an extract from their web site to enlighten us:-
Arctic Tern
"It turns out that the Arctic Tern has many qualities that are also important to bicycles and transportation. These are aspects that we aspire to with our brand, our company, and our products.

The Arctic Tern is a marvel.

It is small and lightweight, both of which are good for transportation efficiency, and which we strive to emulate with our products.

It flies an average of 71,000 km per annual migration, or nearly 2.5 million km in a lifetime: the longest distance travelled by any animal. Completing the same distance on a bicycle would require riding at an average commuter speed, every waking hour, everyday, all year long.

It is relatively long-lived, having a lifespan of more than 30 years. For a company, we think that would be a pretty good start.

It mates for life, which means the Arctic Tern values reliability and long-term relationships. These are values upon which we also place high import.

It is a social animal that shows concern for its companions. We expect the same from all members of the Tern global family.

Although not endangered, its global migratory habits make it susceptible to a range of climate issues. We are sensitive to the impact we have on the planet and believe bicycles can help stem the tide of climate change."

Tern is an inspiration for this life which we all share on planet earth. It's our turn to turn our life up and do our part for a better tomorrow.

Chopard's Collaborative Passion for Classic Racing Cars

What do you think of when "Monaco" is mentioned? The most likely answer would be the monarchy.

If you a racing enthusiast, it would be the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Grand Prix De Monaco Historique.

And, if wristwatches are your cup of tea or coffee that make you tick, then you would think of Chopard, which has been both a sponsor as well as official timekeeper for the The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique (G.P.M.H.) since 2002.

This racing competition features legendary mounts from the 1930s such as Bugatti and Alfa Romeo, F1 vehicles from the 1950s to the 1970s as well as GT cars from the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar and Aston Martin.

"For Chopard, the automobile world and watchmaking are all part of the same world of sophisticated and accomplished mechanics. Chopard shares drivers' passion for high-precision mechanics and for exceptional objects. Yet this partnership stems from an even more personal ambition. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (Chopard co-president) himself collects and drives historical cars.

He adds, "This passion was passed on to me by my father, who is a classic car enthusiast. In 1987, I went to Italy to discover the Mille Miglia. I was impressed and I realised the tremendous opportunity represented by an association between classic racing and Chopard watches."

Drawing inspiration from these timeless race cars from the 1920s to 1985, Chopard has created three models of watches in combinations of steel, titanium and rose gold. The latest versions are as follows:

I)  "G.P.M.H. Automatic watch is the ultimate timekeeping instrument. Its COSC-certified self-winding calibre is very much like a V6 engine. it guarantees chronometric performance to match the demands of drivers and of Chopard itself."

II) "Playing the role of a V8 engine, G.P.M.H. Power Control features a power-reserve indicator placed at 6 o'clock. Its appearance is directly inspired by petrol or oil gauges."

III) "G.P.M.H. Chrono is the V12 of the family. This powerful, sleek and noble instrument is the driver's watch par excellence."

Thus, with a Chopard G.P.M.T., the essence of mechanical excellence, impeccable ergonomics and the distinction inherent in the world of drivers has been encapsulated in a watch on your wrist.

Chopard G.P.M.H. Restrospective from 2002 through to 2012
