Hey, do you TTXS?

TTXS is not another geek speak. It stands for Tian Tian Xiang Shang in Chinese where:

Tian Tian refers to the little boy who is always curious and never shy to point at unknown things, and to raise questions; and

Xiang Shang means "looking up".

Created by Danny Yung, his TTXS conceptual comics encourage us to keep  'looking up every day' or 'day after day, looking up'. Subsequently, Tian Tian was transformed into a figurine.

Tian Tian's white 3-dimensional body represents:
a) a blank piece of paper full of possibiiities; and
b) a platform for discussion, engagement and creativity.

Meet Miffy

Miffy could well be the second most famous rabbit in the world after Bugs Bunny and she could well be mistaken to be of recent Japanese origin.

Truth be told, Miffy was created by Dutch artist Nick Bruna and she made her first appearance in a picture book written and illustrated by him way back in 1955.

Since then Miffy has appeared in a series of some 30 picture books, two television series and even a full-length movie. And, she is now popping up every where in various manners such as toys, figurines, clothes, table lamps, utensils, stationery and household items.

"When We Were Young" by Adele

The signature voice of Adele is hard to mimic and this particular rendition of "When We Were Young" is IMHO a heart-tugging top-notch take of her singing prowess to connect with her listeners besides her other hits such as "Rolling In The Deep".

To me the most resounding moment of this gig was the sound of silence that ensued when her voice ceased to fill the studio. It was such a rapt moment that, if I am mistaken, she said "Holy, me" at the end.

There comes a moment when an artiste is herself surprised by how good she has sounded. To me this was that kind of special moment for Adele.

"When We Were Young"

Everybody loves the things you do
From the way you talk to the way you move
Everybody here is watching you
'Cause you feel like home
You're like a dream come true

But if by chance you're here alone
Can I have a moment before I go?
'Cause I've been by myself all night long
Hoping you're someone I used to know

You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young

Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song

I was so scared to face my fears
Nobody told me that you'd be here
And I swear you moved overseas
That's what you said, when you left me

You still look like a movie
You still sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young

Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song

When we were young [4x]

It's hard to admit that
Everything just takes me back
To when you were there
To when you were there
And a part of me keeps holding on
Just in case it hasn't gone
I guess I still care
Do you still care?

It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young

When we were young [4x]

Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
Oh I'm so mad I'm getting old
It makes me reckless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young

Extraordinary Polka Dots by Yayoi Kusama

Do you like polka dots? If you do, you are in good company with Yayoi Kusama, a visual artist and writer who is, inter alia, renowned for her signature polka dots, which are derived from her hallucinations at a young age.

According to Wikipedia, "Throughout her career she has worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, collage, soft sculpture, performance art, and environmental installations, most of which exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colors, repetition, and pattern. A precursor of the pop art, minimalist and feminist art movements, Kusama influenced her contemporaries such as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal and exhibited works alongside the likes of them.

In 1957, she moved to the United States, settling down in New York City where she produced a series of paintings influenced by the abstract expressionist movement. Switching to sculpture and installation as her primary media, Kusama became a fixture of the New York avant-garde during the early 1960s where she became associated with the pop art movement. Embracing the rise of the hippie counterculture of the late 1960s, Kusama came to public attention when she organized a series of happenings in which naked participants were painted with brightly colored polka dots.

Although largely forgotten after departing the New York art scene in the early 1970s, Kusama is now acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan, and an important voice of the avant-garde."

Her obsession has been transposed onto a plethora of objects such as pumpkins. It has also been used to create visuals of vast fields ("infinity nets", as she called them) of polka dots as far as the eye can see. In her Mirror/Infinity room installations, "purpose-built rooms lined with mirrored glass contain scores of neon-colored balls, hanging at various heights above the viewer. Standing inside on a small platform, an observer sees light repeatedly reflected off the mirrored surfaces to create the illusion of a never-ending space."

She also uses her dots to cover completely (obliterate), for example, white giant tulips such that they are 'wiped out' by colourful dots and made 'invisible' in a white room.

Her current exhibition "Life Is The Heart of a Rainbow" is being held at the National Gallery Singapore till 3 September 2017. Word has it that it will be moving on to Melbourne next.

At a personal level, I think that art is symbolic and potential powerful if clearly defined and communicated succinctly by the artist. The tangible artwork is the outward form of the heart and soul of the artist, if you will.

So first of all, we have to understand (with the artist's help) as to what is the story or message. Then, it is for the receiver to percolate and interpret for himself what that means to him.

For a grander scheme of what art entails, please click here for The Value and Importance of the Arts and the Humanities in Education and Life By Barbara Ernst Prey.

An excerpt from the article is as follows:

"A lot of what artists do is tell stories. They help us make sense of our world, and they broaden our experience and understanding. The arts enable us to imagine the unimaginable, and to connect us to the past, the present, and the future, sometimes simultaneously.

Great literature, films and visual art transport us to different places and cultures; great art even allows us to see ourselves and our own community through a different lens. To see King Lear performed on stage helps us confront our own complicated family dynamics. Likewise, if we study the faces captured in Dorothea Lange’s black and white portraits from the 1930s and 1940s, we can better empathize with those who endured the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

I’ve heard biographer and journalist Walter Isaacson say that science can give us empirical facts and try to tie them together with theories, but it’s the humanists and the artists who turn them into narratives with moral, emotional and spiritual meanings. He’s right, of course. Art gives meaning to the data science provides." --Dr. Mitchell B. Reiss

Based on a recent e-mail interview with The Business Times (Source: Business Times, 9 June 2017), Kusama said:

"Over the years of dedication and struggling, I have aged. But I am willing to continue this path and do my best to create art to leave the message of 'love forever' to the young generations.

"Since childhood I had a strong will of becoming an artist and worked very hard to create paintings and sculptures. I was motivated by the hopes to deliver the message of my life through exhibiting my art.

"Today, the world is threatened by terrorism and war. So many people suffer from widening disparity between the rich and the poor. I am moved that the younger generations are sincere to themselves, trying to create a world of warmth for peace and for those who suffer. I stake my life on my art to deepen people's hope for their lives and for world peace and distribution of love."

Let the Arts brighten up your day and help you to live life in a fuller and more uplifted fashion.

It's Raining M&M Chocolates!

What do you see in the following installation?

What caught my attention the most was the swirling umbrella with strands of oversized, colourful M&M chocolates. Then, it was the two tall smiley figurines. All in all a novel installation which is eye-catching.

Upon reviewing the picture, I realised that there were feet dangling from the top. So I looked up and sighted more of those oversized M&Ms above the umbrella.

Then I caught it -- It's Raining M&M Chocolates! The chocolates were streaming down the umbrella like rain drops and those two tall figurines got their hands full trying (gleefully!) to catch all those M&Ms.

If you are okay with playing with food, here are two M&M artworks for your inspiration:

Persimmon - Nature's Candy

Grandmothers and mothers all over the world are known to enjoy eating persimmon. It is love at first bite, literally, as persimmons are refreshing with a lingering sweet aftertaste.

Persimmons come in two varieties: soft or hard. While they are sure-winners as gifts for grandmas and moms, you could do better if you also know whether they prefer the mushy or crunchy version.

However, persimmons are no where up there if you ('bros') are thinking of getting them for your girlfriend. You are better off with flowers or chocolates. That said, this nature's candy might still work for you if you were to serve them as cut fruits as part of your hands-on home-cooked dinner date.

Change Your Mindset and You Will Change Your World

Along the lines of "Attitude Determines Your Altitude" and "You Are What You Think", if you can change your mindset you can change your world.

Mindsets refers to what you believe (your beliefs system) or your way of looking at things which will, in turn, determine your behaviour, outlook and mental attitudes.
Image by geralt, courtesy of Pixabay

For example, have you ever seen a negative person (full of negatives or minuses)? Of course not. BUT, you can hear and determine whether he is negative by the ways he talks. On the other hand, we have Positive Personalities who could bring sunshine on a rainy day by the way they speak or communicate. We speak what is in our heart -- that which has become our mindset.

Therefore, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." -- Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

Here then are some quotes to refresh your mind and foster a new mindset for the making of a new you. You have it within you the power to change your world.

"People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform those with a fixed mindset, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new." -- Travis Bradberry

"Common sense would suggest that having ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms." -- Travis Bradberry

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman

"The human mind is naturally creative, constantly looking to make associations and connections between things and ideas.  It wants to explore, to discover new aspects of the world, and to invent.  To express this creative force is our greatest desire, and the stifling of it is the source of our misery.  What kills the creative force is not age or a lack of talent, but our own spirit, our own attitude.

We become too comfortable with the knowledge we have gained in our apprenticeships. We grow afraid of entertaining new ideas and the effort that this requires. To think more flexibly entails a risk—we could fail and be ridiculed. We prefer to live with familiar ideas and habits of thinking, but we pay a steep price for this: our minds go dead from the lack of challenge and novelty; we reach a limit in our field and lose control over our fate because we become replaceable.” -- Robert Greene

"To create something exceptional, your mindset must be relentlessly focused on the smallest detail." -- Giorgio Armani

"Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking." -- Marcus Aurelius

Mark Zuckerberg’s full commencement address at Harvard, 2017

The following is a selection of highlights from Mark Zuckerberg's commencement address to Harvard University's Class of 2017 for your refreshing.

"One of my favorite stories is when John F. Kennedy visited the NASA space center, he saw a janitor carrying a broom and he walked over and asked what he was doing. The janitor responded: “Mr. President, I’m helping put a man on the moon.”

Purpose is that sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are needed, that we have something better ahead to work for. Purpose is what creates true happiness."

Image by johnhain by courtesy of Pixabay

Mark outlined three ways to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose:
1) By taking on big meaningful projects together;
2) By redefining equality so everyone has the freedom to pursue purpose; and
3) By building community across the world.

1) Taking On Big Meaningful Projects

"Every generation has its defining works. More than 300,000 people worked to put a man on the moon—including that janitor. Millions of volunteers immunized children around the world against polio. Millions of more people built the Hoover Dam and other great projects.
:
Now it’s our turn to do great things. I know, you’re probably thinking: I don’t know how to build a dam, or get a million people involved in anything.

But let me tell you a secret: No one does when they begin. Ideas don’t come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them. You just have to get started.

If I had to understand everything about connecting people before I began, I never would have started Facebook.

Movies and pop culture get this all wrong. The idea of a single eureka moment is a dangerous lie. It makes us feel inadequate since we haven’t had ours. It prevents people with seeds of good ideas from getting started."

2) Redefining equality so everyone has the freedom to pursue purpose

"We should have a society that measures progress not just by economic metrics like GDP, but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful. We should explore ideas like universal basic income to give everyone a cushion to try new things. We’re going to change jobs many times, so we need affordable child care to get to work and health care that aren’t tied to one company. We’re all going to make mistakes, so we need a society that focuses less on locking us up or stigmatizing us. And as technology keeps changing, we need to focus more on continuous education throughout our lives.

And yes, giving everyone the freedom to pursue purpose isn’t free. People like me should pay for it. Many of you will do well and you should too."

"But it’s not just about money. You can also give time. I promise you, if you take an hour or two a week—that’s all it takes to give someone a hand, to help them reach their potential."

"We can all make time to give someone a hand. Let’s give everyone the freedom to pursue their purpose—not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because when more people can turn their dreams into something great, we’re all better for it."

3) Building community across the world

"This is the struggle of our time. The forces of freedom, openness and global community against the forces of authoritarianism, isolationism, and nationalism. Forces for the flow of knowledge, trade and immigration against those who would slow them down. This is not a battle of nations, it’s a battle of ideas. There are people in every country for global connection and good people against it.

This isn’t going to be decided at the UN either. It’s going to happen at the local level, when enough of us feel a sense of purpose and stability in our own lives that we can open up and start caring about everyone. The best way to do that is to start building local communities right now."

"Change starts local. Even global changes start small—with people like us. In our generation, the struggle of whether we connect more, whether we achieve our biggest opportunities, comes down to this—your ability to build communities and create a world where every single person has a sense of purpose."

As he recalled this prayer "May the source of strength, who blessed the ones before us, help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing.", Mark's wish for the Class of 2017 was that they would find the courage to make their life a blessing.
