A Little Bird Told Me

When we know of a matter but do not wish to disclose the source, we would resort to saying, 'A little bird told me.' It is not just a rumor that we are hearing, but something which we have heard from what we would deem to be a reliable source.

And, what is the truth of the matter concerning this little bird of a spy drone from times past? I think we can pin-it to what is found the the Book of Ecclesiastes of the Holy Bible as follows:-

"Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter." -- Ecclesiastes 10:20 (NKJV)

Many Bible scholars believe that it was King Solomon who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes by the inspiration of the Spirit of God. As a king, Solomon is well disposed to the issues of life faced by rulers and wealthy people.

While birds would not be able to divulge secrets, not even carrier pigeons, the reference to 'a bird' is a convenient and self-explanatory metaphor for a spy or an insider.

Irony of Ironies

Recently, I chanced upon these writings on the back of a public toilet door:-

"These are the things I hate:

1. Vandalism

2. List

3. Irony "

Life is full of ironies. Overheard, or rather over-read on the internet, someone just said, or rather was quoted in writing for having said that he (okay, it's a male) would kill to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Here are some food for thoughts along this drift ...

Isn't it ironic that half the world is starving; while the other half is trying to lose weight?

Where is the butter in peanut butter?

What about the pine tree and where is the apple connection to a pineapple?

Time flies, but can butter really fly?

There is bee hoon (rice vermicelli) in mee siam (Asian dish), but where's the mee (noodle)?

Of course, you won't find ham in a hamburger. But, neither would you find hand in a Handburger (cos' it's made by hands)!

Much Ado About a Gate Signage

When passing by a construction side I can well understand the logic of the words for a signage such as the following:-

From the aforesaid wordings it would imply that the gate is to be closed whenever the workers are inside or outside of the secured area. I am sure it did not mean that the gate cannot be opened at certain times or under certain circumstances.

This brings me to the next sign which could well prove to be a strong contender for greater conciseness to say what was meant to be conveyed all along when saying that 'gates must be closed at all times' :-

It is refreshing to have read this different take on the gate signage.

No Letting Up On Words

Words are everywhere and they continue to influence and direct our life commercially or otherwise. Just 2 examples here which caught my attention in the ebb and flow of words.

Imagine feeling tired after all the walking in the park or mall and you reach an elevator which alludes you to the following health benefit:-

Please give your heart a lift ... use the stairs

And, just when you thought that there are so many mouths to feed ...

I'm famished! Please feed me.

Words are powerful and hold their own whether we like it or not. Happy feeding on more words today!
