The Curious Business of Being Alive

Life, I have noticed, is a curious affair—

A little bit symphony,
a little bit flat tyre.

One day you are striding through sunshine,
certain that destiny has reserved
a front-row seat especially for you.

The next,
you are standing in a supermarket queue,
holding a leaking bag of oranges,
wondering where exactly
your grand plan misplaced its trousers.

Yet somehow,
the world keeps offering invitations.

A sparrow lands on a railing
with all the confidence
of a billionaire investor.

A child laughs at absolutely nothing.

The scent of coffee drifts through the air
as if the universe has appointed itself
Minister of Small Delights.

And then an epiphany arrives—

Not with trumpets.

Not with fireworks.

Not even with a helpful instruction manual.

It arrives quietly and says,

"Perhaps life was never meant
to be perfect before it could be beautiful."

This comes as a surprise.

Most of us spend years negotiating with happiness.

"I'll be joyful when..."

When the promotion comes.

When the bills shrink.

When my waistline cooperates.

When everyone finally recognizes
my undeniable brilliance.

But happiness, it seems,
has terrible hearing.

It never arrives on command.

Instead, it sneaks in through side doors.

It appears during conversations
that weren't scheduled.

During sunsets that weren't requested.

During ordinary Tuesdays
that had no intention
of becoming memorable.

Another epiphany:

The oak tree does not apologize
for growing slowly.

The river does not panic
because the mountain stands in its way.

It simply finds another route.

Nature, apparently,
has never attended a motivational seminar,
yet it understands resilience perfectly.

And what of our troubles?

They are real.

The disappointments.

The losses.

The dreams that wandered off
without leaving a forwarding address.

Yet even these strange companions
often carry hidden gifts.

Patience arrives disguised as delay.

Wisdom arrives disguised as mistakes.

Strength arrives disguised as burdens.

The wrapping paper is dreadful,
but the contents can be remarkable.

Then comes perhaps the greatest discovery:

Life is not a puzzle to be solved.

It is a journey to be experienced.

A song to be sung,
sometimes beautifully,
sometimes off-key,
but sung nevertheless.

The goal is not to avoid every storm.

The goal is to learn
that we can dance in a little rain.

To laugh at ourselves.

To marvel often.

To love generously.

To keep planting gardens
even after difficult winters.

For one day,
perhaps many years from now,
we may look back and realize
that the moments we called ordinary
were, in fact, extraordinary.

That the people we hurried past
were treasures.

That the challenges we feared
were shaping us.

That joy had been walking beside us
all along,
waiting patiently
for us to notice.

And so here is a toast
to this wild, improbable adventure:

To hopeful hearts.

To second chances.

To stubborn dreams.

To unexpected laughter.

To mornings that begin again.

And to the astonishing privilege
of being alive—

A traveller beneath the stars,
carrying both scars and songs,

discovering, day by day,

that life is not beautiful
because it is easy,

but because,
through all its twists and tumbles,

it remains gloriously,
wonderfully,

worth living.
